Ventnor Botanic Gardens were created in 1969 when the Royal National Hospital for Chest Diseases - a world renowned hospital, specialising in the treatment of consumption - was demolished.

The hospital was founded in 1868 when TB was one of the Developed worlds' biggest killers. Vaccination and antibiotics virtually eradicated the disease in the 20th century, and led to the eventual closure of the hospital in 1964.

The gardens are haunted by the echoes of the old hospital, the sound of weeping and moaning has been heard, and ghostly nurses have been seen in the gardens. An apparition of the demolished hospital building is also reported to have been seen.
