Sandown Zoo on Culver Parade has not always been a zoo. In the 1800s this was the location of a wartime fort and barracks. The old gun emplacement here has been said to be cursed by bad luck during it's time. In 1888 a young gunner based at this main gun emplacement was cut in half in a tragic accident where one of the guns rolled backwards, therefore severing his body in two and eerie still was that a few years earlier a master gunner based at the very same gun emplacement went insane, killed his wife and child and then slit his own throat.
Both these ghosts and more have been seen by visitors and staff at the zoo but the most prominant to visit is the young soldier who was cut in two, his ghosts has been seen wandering the site where the gun used to be placed and around the area of the moat.
