Oh yes, believe it or not there are dozens of hospitals all over the counrty that are reputed to be haunted and it's not at all surprising if you consider for a moment all that occurs within hospitals themselves. Places where many have seen their final days out and even places where staff have had so many happy memories and just want to carry on helping people. Of course we do have reports of hauntings in hospitals that are not friendly towards others and have often caused problems. So how better to start this topic than with a sample of the handful of reputedly haunted hospitals around the UK.
Barnsley (Yorkshire) - Barnsley District Hospital.
It is said that this hospital was built on the site of a poor house. Staff and patients have often reported the sounds of children wailing from the infectious diseases unit. A ghost that is nicknamed Sally haunts another location within the hospital and many have reported being touched on the side of their body as they enter the room in which she died. Another friendlier spirit haunts the offices, seen many times and reported as an old lady in a rocking chair.
Bedford (Bedfordshire) - Bedford Hospital.
Two nurses here reported seeing an attractive girl in a long, flowing dress glide towards the toilets on the South wing. They followed her there only to find the room empty. The Shand Ward is also reported as being haunted by the sounds of shuffling footsteps.
Birmingham (West Midlands) - Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, City Hospital.
Upon construction the cctv cameras picked up the image of a grey figure. Upon workers investigating they found nothing. A Ward sister has also been reported on the top floor of the hospital but only her top torso is seen. Staff have also been locked in a room upon investigating the sounds of crying from within the said room. A priest has been summouned to the area.
Burnley (Lancashire) - Victoria Hospital.
A manisfestation of an old coal mine worker has been reported here on many ocassions and is often seen by many night shift workers. He is recorded as having died at the hospital following an accident.
Cardiff (Wales) - Llandough Hospital.
A woman here had an experience involving a crisis manisfestation. She reported seeing her own dead body on a bed in one of the rooms. One week later she died of typhoid fever...her body was exactly where she had foretold it to be.
Chichester (Sussex) - Graylingwell Hospital, the well contained on the grounds.
A monk has been reported here walking around the grounds in his sandals before vanishing into thin air.
Chorley (Lancashire) - Chorley Hospital.
Anorher crisis manisfestation is reported here Doors opening and slamming all by themselves got the attention of two staff nurses just in time to save a small baby from suffocation in the very room where the doors took on a life of their own.
Chichester (Sussex) - Sherburne Hospital, Broyle.
The ghost of an old grey lady has been reported here. Staff say she is a lucky charm as all twenty staff that have seen here fell pregnant within 3 months of seeing the spirit.
Cliveden (Buckinghamshire) - Cliveden Canadian War Memorial Hospital.
One of the most active hospital locations. Several spirits are said to haunt this hospital. The most commonly reported are that of a one legged soldier who wanders through the maternity unit and makes babies cry. The other is a shade known as the Flincher. This shade is not a nice one and terrorises people by chasing after them and shrieking.
E1 (Greater London) - Royal London Hospital.
One of the creepiest locations by far. This hospital is reputed to be haunted by several spirits. One of the best known is an old lady that is often seen walking around the grounds. The hospital also has a tradition that the shutters must be closed at night, for if they are not it is believed someone will die.
St Bartholomews Hospial-London.
Another active location. This hospital has reported a grey lady on Grace Ward. She is found in records to have cared for psychiatric patients but was sadly killed by one herself. She is reported by staff and patients to still be helping those in need. A monk is also reported to glide over cobble stones before vanishing, but perhaps the most erriest report of them all at this hospital is that of the Coffin Lift. Reports show that a nurse was murdered in the lift by a patient whislt she was on her way to the basement. The lift now takes patients to the basement regardless to what button you press but perhaps the most un-nerving aspect is that we have reports of the lift actually following people up the stairs. The stairs run next to the lift and the lift in question is a very old style one, chain link slide door and such. Reports state that the frightened staff, patienst and visitors have gotten out of the lift and decided upon taking the stirs back up instead of the lift only to see the light in the lift come on and as they walk up the stairs the lift slowly follows them. We even have a report of a visitor stopping on the stairs to see if the lift stopped as well....he ran as fast as he could the minute it did and the lift was not far behind him.
Eastbourne (Sussex) - All Saints Hospital.
A nun has been reported here. Staff and patients have reported seeing her vanish in a puff of smoke.
York (Yorkshire) - St Mary's Hospital.
There are reports here of a nurse who still wanders the old buildings trying to help patients before vanishing into thin air.
